Leave it to Zynga and listening to too many whiners. They have nerfed the ‘Design Your Crate Contest’ and have released a new shortlisted survey. The new survey will be open from 11 June 2012 to 12 June 2012 11.59pm PST and can be found Here.
The nerfing happened because within the rules of the contest Zynga stated the following;

Step 1: You could create the concept using the image editing tools or you could also describe the concept. For creating your crate, use Paint or PhotoShop or any other kind of image editing program, you have installed on your computer. Experiment with colors, concepts, items, or even accessories. You could also describe the concept.

If you look at the new survey (Shown below) you will see the Jesus Christ Crate has been removed.
Really Zynga? Why did you remove the Jesus Christ Crate selection? Because it offended someone? Really? I’m sorry, but if the suggested Jesus Christ Crate offended you then why are you even playing a game that is all about crime, thievery, killing, stealing, etc? This game should offend you!
Then there’s the second nerf. And that is that jennichristie (who made the suggestion) now has a legitimate complaint. Jennichristie followed the rules, for one. In addition, if she (assuming Jennichristie is a she) has been determined to have not followed the rules then what is the difference between her suggested Jesus Christ Crate and the Russian Doll Crate?

My idea is a crate shaped like a Russian Doll... I dont have the skills to do decent artwork, but i am sure you can do that if you like the idea!
In fact, Jennichristie’s suggestion was more descriptive since it contained at least 1 loot suggestion. Shouldn’t both suggestions have been removed? Why not?

If You Don’t Like Mafia Wars Then Go Play Sim City Social!
Ok, you can’t … yet. But, about the beginning of July you will be able to. That is about when the game is slated to go live.

Aside from Electronic Arts, some are expecting this game to rival some of Zynga’s top games. The following is from an article on SeekingAlpha.com;

Electronic Arts (EA) announced yesterday at its press conference at E3 that it is releasing a social version of SimCity, known as SimCity Social, which is set to compete with one of Zynga's (ZNGA) mainstay games, Farmville, and subsequent games such as Cityville. SimCity Social will be available in about three weeks, says Lucy Bradshaw, Senior VP of Maxis, the unit that is responsible for the Sim series of games.
If successful, this new launch could significantly hurt Zynga, as it shows that the life-span of the first mover advantage into social games may quickly be going. SimCity is a brand that has a strong group of followers, and the migration of a large number of Farmville users to SimCity Social would be a death blow to Zynga. Last year, the Sims Social already attracted more monthly active users than any Zynga game, and SimCity Social may even overtake that. The question becomes, how many users will Zynga lose and how does it make up for this?
I agree that Sim City has a strong fan base, I being one of them. But, to claim that “Sims Social has more monthly active users than any Zynga game” is not apparently accurate. That is at least not on Facebook alone.
On facebook The Sims Social has less than half the MAU as Texas Hold’em Poker and CityVille.
SimCity Social may have the potential to cut into the Zynga stronghold some, however. In 5 days the associated ‘Get Free Stuff’ app has 370,000 MAU.
Electronic Arts needs to be careful because many fans of these social games are growing weary of them and the ploys and antics of the companies trying to make money off of them. If the game is playable at our leisure and we are not pounded with endless missions or items or, in this case, buildings that require the help of 100’s of friends or time clocks that we need to be there for night and day then this game could rise to the top of the AppData.com Leader Boards. The money will be there so please make the events ‘special’ again and not ‘constant’! Please grow the game and not drive it into the ground! Please allow the game to be fun and not a chore or burden! I’m talking to you too Zynga!
At least for now, there is something to be excited about and that is hopefully there will be ‘More City And Less Ville.”
Ok, Ok, I give up! I surrender! Seems to be the latest sentiment of many players in Mafia Wars as of late. And that sentiment is showing in the DAU.
On Fiday, June 8, 2012, I made this post; Time For Pac Member Changes Drawing Near. Within that post I informed you that “during the past 3 months we have seen a Mafia Wars low in the DAU of 380,000 on May 29, 2012.” This was the image of the DAU in that post;
It took just 3 days to shatter that low in the DAU. Here is today’s DAU numbers;
We now sit at 360,000 Daily Active Users And more and more families are looking more and more like the following when they run their Family Managers;
There are a multitude of reasons why many players have quit playing Mafia Wars. The reasons include the bugs, glitches, and issues within the game itself (As one example shown below of images not showing making it impossible to play at all);
To others the reason may be the impossible to complete features such as Family Progression or even the Family Module itself;
The latest mass exodus from the game could be contributed (at least in part) to the ‘New’ VIP Membership Benefits.
Why? Because all this program has succeeded at doing is segregating the player base. The only true advantages that are being gained by the release of this program are the fact that Zynga is making a ton of money from the program and is likely beginning to see less stress on their server loads because players ARE quitting. And NO, they aren’t going and playing Farmville (Which IS STILL KICKING MAFIA WARS ASS);
The VIP Memberships is just more proof that Zynga does not care about how large a player base Mafia Wars has.
The only questions remaining are how low will the DAU fall to before it reaches bottom? How many of those who do spend money will quit also when the player base drops so low that they are only competing with themselves? How long will Zynga continue to update Mafia Wars? Will YOU still be around to find out the answers to these questions or will you be singing “Seasons In The Sun” to this game?
